How to Insert Page Numbers into a Writer Document
If you prefer a how-to video over a how-to article, watch the how-to insert page numbers video.
The main thing to know about inserting page numbers is that you should insert page numbers into a header or a footer. Technically, you insert a page number field into the header or footer, and while can simply say “page numbers,” it’s good to know the technical term so you don’t get confused when you see it.
If you want the page numbers at the top of the page, first insert a header, and then insert the page number field into the header; if you want the page numbers at the bottom of the page, insert a footer, and then insert the page number field into the footer.
Whether you choose to use a header or footer depends on your personal preference, or on the guidelines of a specific documentation style (e.g. MLA style). You can insert headers, footers, and page numbers via the Insert menu.
In this tutorial I will show you how to insert the page number field into the header.
The Header
Before inserting the page number field, first insert the header. One way to insert the header is by going to Insert→Header, and select the page style to apply a header to. Unless you’re using other page styles, “Default” should be the only choice.
Alternatively, you insert a header via the header tab of the Page style dialog box (Format→Page). In the header tab, simply check the “Header on” box, and click OK at the bottom of the window. Once this is done your document should have a header in it.
The Page Number Field
Don’t try inserting page numbers by typing in a number. Instead, make sure your cursor is in the header, and then go to Insert→Fields→Page Number. The number 1 will appear in the header of your first page. You will notice a gray shading behind the number, but don’t worry because it’s only visible on the screen to mark the field; it’s not going to show up when you print your document or if you export to PDF. If the gray shading aggravates you, simply disable Field Shadings (View→Field Shadings).
By default the page numbers are aligned with the left margin, but you can align it with the right margin by pressing the Align Right icon in the formatting toolbar. You can also add a prefix, such as “Page” or your name, before the number.

Don't forget to add a space between the word Page and the number.
